Villa Cora History

Built in 1868 as a gift for his bride...

Villa Cora is a 19th-century villa located in Florence, Italy. It was built in 1868 by Baron Gustave Oppenheim, a German financier, as a gift for his young bride, Cora Segrè, a member of a wealthy Italian banking family. In 1914, the Oppenheims were forced to flee Florence due to the outbreak of World War I. Villa Cora was confiscated by the Italian government and used as a military hospital during the war. After the war, Villa Cora was used as a school and a hotel. In 1995, the villa was purchased by a group of investors who restored it to its former glory. Today, Villa Cora is a luxury hotel and a popular tourist destination. Some of the notable guests who have stayed at Villa Cora over the years include Queen Victoria of England, Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor.
